Statement Delivered by the Eritrean Delegation during the 79th World Health Assembly, 18 May-23 May 2026 Genève

Mr. President, Excellencies,

The theme of this Assembly — “Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility” — reflects Eritrea’s long-standing commitment to self-reliance and health sovereignty. Our development policy places people at the center and makes health a top priority. We act on the conviction that health is a human right and a shared responsibility.

Over the past three decades, Eritrea has steadily widened access to quality health care. Preventive, promotive, and curative services are broadly available and heavily subsidized. Investments in hospitals, clinics, and community programs have brought care closer to home. Today, most people, even in the remote areas, live within five kilometers of a functioning health facility.

Prevention guides our health policy. Strong immunization and child services keep coverage high and maternal care nearly universal. Community health workers—our first and most trusted caregivers—reach even the remotest areas. This proves resilience is forged as much in communities as in institutions.

Reshaping global health begins at home. It must be rooted in community engagement and coordinated, cross‑sector action. Governments, communities, and partners share this responsibility and must work together to improve health for all.

Resources challenges persist, but unilateral coercive measures remain among the gravest threats to health justice, by blocking access to medicines, technologies, and supplies. Addressing these issues requires firm national resolve and true international solidarity grounded in equity and respect.

In closing, Eritrea reaffirms its commitment to building a sovereign, equitable, and resilient health system that leaves no one behind.
