Since very ancient time women play a vital role in the making of their respective societies and communities. Women shoulder a big and crucial responsibility regarding their families and sur- roundings. They are the lamp of their respective homes and pro- vide with light and hope. Many believe that women are engaged only in the domestic chores and minor tasks but wom- en’s contribution to their society goes beyond domestic contribu- tion and extend on national, re- gional and international level. Women are claiming and fight- ing for their equal rights as hu- man beings through their undying voice and efforts. Eritrean wom- en also own their share of history in bringing independence to their motherland by fighting equally beside their male comrades. The National Union of Eri- trean Women has been working relentlessly in bringing different changes in the lives of women. This union organized itself to lib- erate women from poverty, dis- ease, illiteracy and above all to improve women’s social position and to help women live a happy as well as equal life. The mission of the union has armed its targets since independence in a great length. The NUEW has various braches throughout the country and abroad. The Senafe branch of NUEW is one among the many. In the sub zone of Senafe there are 23 administrative areas and about 108 villages. Out of these areas there are 7000 NUEW members. The union has been try- ing to reach out to the remote ar- eas as well. “The union is actively engaged in promoting women’s awareness in health, education and in general women’s participa- tion in politics,” said Mrs. Meaza Sibhatu Director of NUEW in the sub zone of Senafe and Adi keih. “When we address the top- ic ‘health’- mothers have to be healthy so as to have a healthy community; they have to go to hospitals during their pregnancy period and do their follow-ups. They have to vaccine their chil- dren after birth and have to abol- ish the traditional process of girls’ circumcisions. We usually create awareness about those issues in order to broaden their understand- ing about its merits and demerits”, said Mrs. Meaza. Further, if a mother is educated the entire society is also educated; thus fighting against illiteracy has been the main task of the union. Women have to be educated as to change their lifestyle and of the community. The committee is working to eradicated illiteracy by the year of 2013, explained Mrs. Meaza. Women have to be independent financially hence the union is also providing support to change their life style. “The participation of women in this sub zone is really amazing; naturally these societies are a hos- pitable and understanding. It is an honor to work with these people. The women of this society believe that the union is established for them so they participate in differ- ent issues at full capacity” added the director. In the year 2000 the TPLF re- gime invaded the sub zone of Senafe and destroyed the town totally, leaving the infrastructure and constructed buildings in ruins. The women’s training center of Senate was among the destructed buildings by the regime. However, Eritrean women of the NUEW living in the different 25 states of America promised to rebuild the training center. Those Eritrean women demonstrated how the people cooperate and work hand in hand with their government in developing the nation. The rebuilt Women’s Train- ing Center of Senafe inaugurated on July 26, 2012. This training center has 20 sewing machines, 10 computers and 360 chairs for the meeting hall. Those women who have built the training cen- ter have indicated that they have confronted numerous obstacles from different organizations and even from the US government nevertheless they have challenged all the hurdles that stood in front of them. “They have invested 20 million Nakfa for the building”, explained Mrs. Meaza. During the inauguration period 60 representative women from the 25 states of America participated. Those women were so happy to witness the final result of part of the building. The center will pro- vide computer and sewing train- ing for women. The aim of the center is to help women to be in- dependent financially. The train- ing center will give priority to the wives of martyrs and single mothers. The target aim of the program also gives priority to dependent and needy women. Even though, all the materials are set and ma- jority of the work is done; the training is not totally active and in work due to some technicality delay the Segen construction is causing. This center is a histori- cal building for it has risen again from the ashes; it has been rebuilt from the very point of destruction caused by the TPLF regime just like a phoenix rises from the ash. Further, Mrs. Meaza said that the society of Senafe was happy to see the training center in its final stage. Thus, they all contributed 500,000Nakfa for the commence- ment event. The people wanted to welcome the Eritrean women from the USA with a warm welcoming ceremony. Indeed, the inauguration ceremony was beyond the expectations of the guests. They were unable to express their feel- ings. The Eritrean women from the USA said, ‘what we have done to our people is nothing compar- ing to what they are contributing to our country. Our sisters and brothers are guarding the nation with their life and what we did is really nothing in this sense’. Mrs. Lemlem Hagos member of the regional assembly of the southern region in the s
ub zone of Senafe said,” however small the center was the TPLF regime took everything what was in it and de- stroyed the former house of the training center. The regime stole private and government materi- als from this sub zone; they went to the extent of cutting trees and took it with them. They wanted to change the country into a barren land. However, Eritrean women living in USA have promised to rebuild the center and as per their words they have rebuilt this wom- en’s training center.”Mrs. Hawa Abdu Mohammed also expressed her gratitude to the Eritrean women living in the USA Women’s participation in dif- ferent activity is remarkable in the sub zone of Senafe. The center is for the development and benefit of women thus their awareness in educating themselves is remark- able. The society has a common understanding for development therefore this center will produce many financially independent and reliably educated women. “The inauguration event was wonder- ful, the society prepared Tihini and Kolo as a gift for the dream- makers of Eritrean women as a token of their appreciation- a gift from the heart, said Mrs. Gidey Tesfa member of the assembly. The administrators of this sub zone work with an open mind and heart; there is harmony among the society which strengthens thework atmosphere. They believe in equality, in creating awareness and in the policy of self-reliance which enables anyone to partici- pate and work with a good spirit. The society gives you an open opinion about everything and owns a deep understanding about the equality of women. Thus dur- ing the FGM campaign their unity and understanding have reduced the obstacles and challenges of strongly-held belief and tradition that is seen in other areas of the country. “Their unmatched harmony encourages one to work with full of strength and deter- mination,” explained Mrs. Meaza Sibhatu.
